Crested Butte is a small resort town located in Gunnison County in the State of Colorado. A former coal mining hub, Crested Butte is now a destination for skiing, mountain biking, and a variety of other outdoor activities. In 2003, the estimated year round permanent population of the town was 1,505 residents.

The small mountain town is located on the Slate River and was named for a local mountain peak. Beginning as a gold-mining town, the economic focus of the community turned to coal in the late 1870s and now the economy centers around tourism – specifically skiing.

The little town of Crested Butte is a peaceful entity. The number of violent crimes as recorded by the FNI in 2003 was 2 and the number of murders and homicides was zero. This makes the violent crime rate for the town 1.3 per 1,000 people. Crested Butte was ranked NO. 4 on the Fifty Best Places to Live list which was published by Men's Journal in 2002.

In the last census, fifteen percent of the population listed their ancestry as German, while another seventeen percent listed it as Irish. Fifty-nine percent of the population that is age 25 or over have bachelors' degrees or another advance college degree.
