Mountain Safety
The resort at Crested Butte Mountain is concerned about their visitors' safety on their slopes and being safe while here is an important aspect to your trip. It is essential that each visitor know the skier/rider's responsibility code, and each visitor needs to remember that they are ultimately responsible to ski and ride with care.
Snowboarding and skiing can be enjoyed in various ways. At ski areas you may see people using alpine, snowboard, telemark, cross-country or other specialized equipment, such as that used by disabled or other skiers. No matter how you prefer to enjoy the mountain slopes of Crested Butte, it is important to show courtesy to others and to be aware of the elements of risk in skiing/riding that are a part of the sport. Common sense and personal awareness can help reduce the risk and make your participation both fun and safe.
Crested Butte has a responsibility code which includes:
- Always stay in control and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
- People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
- You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above.
- Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and avoid others.
- Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
- Observe all posted signed and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
- Prior to using any lift, you must have knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
- Come enjoy Crested Butte, but do it in a safe and sane manner.
