Gunnison Colorado is home to a four-year public liberal arts college. This college appeals to many students due to the spectacular mountain scenery and the excellent ski slopes. The college's home town of Gunnison is located just thirty minutes south of Crested Butte.
The most popular majors at Western are business, art, recreation, biology, and a double major in business and recreation. Western also offers a state of the art petroleum geology program, founded and funded by Western State College alumni donations. The enrollment stands at about 2400 students with a high percentage, one-fourth, from out of state. The diversity of the student body allows the small College to thrive in the area and to have a profound effect on the local economy.

Western is located near two great ski areas (Crested Butte Mountain Resort, and Monarch Ski and Snowboard Area), Blue Mesa Reservoir (the largest body of water in Colorado) and all types of outdoor recreation areas.
