The wildflowers bloom in abundance in the mountains and valleys of the Crested Butte area. That is why the area has been dubbed the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. The boundless blooms of the various varieties of wildflowers last throughout the summer.

Lupines cover the hills in a purple haze; Mule's Ears and Columbine bloom everywhere. Other wildflowers which you may see include some red columbine, blue flax, white pea vine, early valerian, wilder geranium, fairy slipper and prairie smoke. There are lots and lots of varieties in the area. Even at heights of over ten thousand feet you can see Glacier Lilies and other high altitude plants.

Each summer the mass of wildflowers is celebrated with a week long festival. Because weather in the Rocky Mountains can be unpredictable, be sure to come prepared, especially if you are planning on taking any mountain hikes. Bring the family along and enjoy the breathtaking mountain landscapes and the magnificent native flora of the region. The bright blue skies if the Rocky Mountains provide a fantastic canvas for the natural display of pastoral wildflowers.
