Learn, explore, and enjoy Colorado's mountain wilderness and history at the same time by exploring some of the great old ghost towns. Pitkin, Colorado is more of a semi-ghost town rather than a full-fledged ghost town. Located near Crested Butte, Pitkin is still home to several residents and the town is filled with relics from the past boom days of mining.

Pitkin, Colorado can be found on the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains near an elevation of 9,000 feet not far from Crested Butte. When silver was discovered in the area, Pitkin became a booming mining town. Getting its start in the 1870s like other mining towns in the area, Pitkin, however, never became as well known as the others in the region.

Pitkin did have its share of saloons and brothels, but it was considered more conservative than the other mining towns. Most productive from 1891 to 1892, the mining operations ceased in 1893. The town managed to stay alive without mining, but after the Great Depression of 1929, Pitkin went into further decline.

This is a great place to explore days gone by as many of the original buildings in Pitkin are in good repair.
