Ruby Mountain Range
Rock-hounding is a popular sport in Colorado. One of the more accessible locations is Ruby Mountain near Crested Butte, Colorado. Here the avid rock hound or the novice can search for Apache Tears and garnets, check out old mining sites, look for arrowheads, or try their hand at panning for gold.
The Ruby Mountain Range is a picturesque range of mountains located near Crested Butte, Colorado. It is a great place to visit in the fall when the aspen forests change the usually green mountain sides to brilliant colors of orange, red and yellow. Rising along the eastern end of the Ragged Wilderness Area, the Ruby Mountain Range is a favorite for hikers. IN addition, Ruby Mountain is noted as a destination location for rock hounds who come to hunt for Apache Tears and garnets.
This area has been an active specimen collecting area for the past one hundred years. Here you can find spessartite, garnets, yellow topaz and obsidian. Two other mountains in the Ruby Mountain Range, Dorothy Hill and Sugarloaf Mountain, also produce mineral specimens. All three mountains were formed by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago.
