For a fantastic scenic drive take the 205 mile long, primarily paved two-lane loop of the West Elk Scenic Loop Byway. This route will take you through picturesque river valleys, across two awe-inspiring mountain passes and along the northern rim of the Black Canyon. This Scenic Byway traversing rural western Colorado provides something of everything.

By traveling on the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway, you will see views of raging waters, glorious river valleys, views from canyon rims, deep green forests and dry desert landscapes. This two-lane roadway is for the most part paved with the exception of County Road 12, which is gravel and is often closed in the winter due to snow.

The portion of the Scenic Byway between Crested Butte and Gunnison is always busy, but the remainder of the 205 miles is generally light. There are many places along the way where you can turn out and step out of your vehicle to get a better look at the views. Noteworthy attractions along the Loop include Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument; Needle Rock, Dillon Pinnacles; West Elk, Maroon Bells–Snowmass and ragged wilderness areas; Curecanti National Recreation Area; historic mining and railroad sites; fishing, boating, swimming, camping, hiking, hunting, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing.

Arkansas Valley Adventures - Whitewater Rafting - We offer whitewater rafting on five different central Colorado rivers with all different ability levels from flat water scenic floats to heart pumping class V.
