Located in the high Rockies, Crested Butte experiences variable weather conditions that often defy convention – summer snow, for example – so packing wisely will ensure a fun, warm and dry Crested Butte vacation.
There are certain essentials that should be included in every visit to Crested Butte regardless of the season: sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses/goggles, reusable water bottle, camera, first-aid kit and knit hat.
For seasonal specifics, here are some suggestions:
Summer Packing List
Planning on biking? Don't forget padded shorts (your heiny will thank you) and bike gloves. Bring several light, synthetic layers including nylon shorts, polypro long and short-sleeve shirts and a mid-weight fleece coat. Lightweight synthetic long underwear and sturdy hiking shoes or boots along with wool socks are indispensable. Also, bring water sandals with a heal strap. Good rain gear, including coat, pants and hat, is a must.
Winter Packing List
It's cold in the big mountains, so bring several warm, layers of fleece, polypro, wool and silk. Mid- to expedition-weight long underwear tops and bottoms are essential – bring several pairs. Pack hefty insulated and waterproof gloves with removable glove liners as well as a neck gaiter or balaclava. A bombproof coat that fits over several under-layers will keep the weather out while protecting your music player, wallet and ski pass.
And don't forget the old mountain adage, “There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.”
