Blue Mesa Reservoir
The largest body of water in Colorado is Blue Mesa Reservoir. Created by Blue Mesa Dam, Blue Mesa Reservoir is 20 miles long, has 96 miles of shoreline, and is the largest Lake Trout and Kokanee salmon fishery in the United States. Blue Mesa Dam was completed in 1965, becoming the first large dam built along the Gunnison River. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison begins below Blue Mesa Dam.

For an excellent fishing experience, cast your line into the waters of Blue Mesa Reservoir. With over 96 miles of shoreline, there is plenty of room for a multitude of anglers. Several marinas dot the shoreline and provide full service for anglers and boaters including slip rentals, boat rentals, guided fishing expeditions, stores and gift shops, gas and some have a boat repair facilities. Along the shore, you will also find a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you want to camp near the water, there is a modern campground close by.
Famous for the Kokanee Salmon that makes Blue Mesa Reservoir their home, you can also catch Brook Trout, Lake Trout, Perch, Rainbow Trout, White Suckers, and Brown Trout. There are no size limits, but there are specific limits on the numbers of each type of fish that you can catch.
The Reservoir is within easy driving distance from Crested Butte, Colorado and is one of the favorite day trips for those who are vacationing in Crested Butte.
