Established in 1871 as an outdoor playground for wealthy Europeans and East Coasters, Colorado Springs continues to attract athletes and outdoor enthusiasts of every type. Colorado Springs is home to one of the world's best multi-sport training facilities, The Olympic Training center, as well as the headquarters of the US Olympic Committee.
With a mild year round climate that rarely goes to extremes, Colorado Springs attracts serious outdoor adventures. However, winters in Colorado Springs bring in less snow than Denver and Salt Lake City, due to a rain shadow effect where the mountains absorb all the precipitation before it reaches the Pike's Peak region, making it a less than optimal ski destination. Warm Chinook winds also contribute to the impermanence of the snow that does fall. Making up for its lack of snow, Colorado Springs boasts and average of 250 sunny days a year with 15-16 inches of annual precipitation.
Located in a high desert with an altitude of 6,035 feet, Colorado Springs offers warm summer days and comfortably cool nights. Falls are typically long with golden light while spring is a cooler introduction to summer. With the great weather comes fantastic hiking, biking, fishing, camping, horseback riding, and virtually any outdoor sport you can think of.
Colorado Springs is also home to the Garden of the Gods, an awesome red rock formation which is run as a public park by the city. Excellent rock climbing is available as is numerous trails. The park service offers free guided walks, hikes, and science based lectures.
