The Yampah Hot Springs, which were originally used by the Ute Indians as a place of healing, was discovered by westerners in 1860. The springs attracted businessmen who planned to build a large hot springs resort in the then new town of Glenwood Springs. Today the developed springs attract thousands of visitors a year.
Glenwood Hot Spring's biggest pool is 405 feet long and 100 feet wide. It holds an astonishing 1,071,000 million gallons of water, and is kept around 90 degrees F. The smaller pool, also known as the Therapy Pool, is 100 feet long and holds 91,000 gallons of water. Its temperature is kept a little hotter than the large pool at 104 degrees F. There are about 15 different types of minerals that are present in the water. Some include Sodium Chloride, Potassium Sulfate, Calcium Sulfate, and Calcium Bicarbonate. The hot springs are open year round although they close several days a year for routine maintenance.
Many visitors are also attracted to Glenwood Springs for its Caverns and Fairy Caves. The caves were discovered in the late 1800s when Charles Darrow noticed that air was flowing out of a vent near the summit of Iron Mountain. The caves' fanciful name comes from Darrow's daughter as she explored the caverns and said the lantern light reflecting off the drops of water on the walls looked like thousands of fairies. The Glenwood Caverns and Fairy Caves offer guided tours as well as a tram ride to the top of Iron Mountain.
