Ohio City, a small Colorado Ghost Town near Crested Butte, has had more demises and rebirths than nearly any other mining town in the area. The first boom occurred in the early 1860s when gold was discovered and then it went bust when the placer gold ran out.
No effort was made to find the original source of the placer gold and Ohio City was abandoned. Then in 1879, the discovery of silver brought miners back to the remnants of the town. The silver boom lasted until 1893 when Ohio City went bust again. Then in 1896, the original source of the gold found in the 1860's was found and the town was once again re-born. Mining operations continued until about 1916 when costs exceeded revenues.
