Crested Butte boasts the world's highest altitude ballooning operation with a launch site high above the valley at 9, 600 feet. Go ballooning with experienced pilots and check out the San Juan and Saguache mountain ranges, as well as the various 14,000 foot peaks in the distance. It would be hard to get any closer to these mountains without actually being on top of them!
Rouse yourself early if you want to take one of these unforgettable hot air balloon rides. Conditions are optimal at sunrise when the wind is not too strong and the light on the mountains is just right. Flights generally last from 45 minutes to an hour, but including travel time to and from the launch site you want to be sure to clear around 3 to 4 hours in your schedule.
