What to Bring
You've got your plane tickets; you have reserved your lodging, lift tickets and possibly even some rental equipment. Now all you have to do is pack! What you decide to bring to Crested Butte will depend on the season and the nature of the activities that you will enjoy while here. Crested Butte is a casual kind of place, which means you can wear casual jeans, or more refined clothing for nights out on the town. Either way, you will feel right at home with whatever you choose to wear.
You've figured that casual clothing is the ticket, but what else needs to get into your suitcase. If you are visiting in the winter and plan to do any skiing or snowboarding, the rule is layers, layers, layers! Start with long underwear or some other synthetic base layer. On top of that place a fleece shirt, jacket or sweater. Next comes the ski pants and outer shell or jacket. Top off your outfit and the top of your head with a warm hat or helmet. Warm gloves or mittens with liners, wool socks, a neck warmer, goggles or sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm – that should do it.
After concluding your day in the open, you need to have something to wear for the evening. Remember that it gets cold when the sun goes down. Make sure you bring some sweaters, sweatshirts, and a warm jacket. Roads and walkways can get slick, so leave the heels at home and bring shoes / boots that give you some traction. Crested Butte is a laid-back, casual place. Jeans and casual slacks will suffice at most of the local restaurants and pubs. Hats and gloves / mittens are a must when venturing out at night. But don't forget to pack a bathing suit for enjoying a nice soak in the hot tub after a day on the slopes!
If you are in Crested Butte in the summer, you'll want to bring the appropriate clothing, which should include rain gear, a lightweight jacket, hat and gloves. Any time of year, don't forget to bring your camera or camcorder, backpack or fanny pack. If you do forget to pack something, don't sweat it. You can pick up clothing, accessories, and toiletries at local retailers.
