No matter the season, climbing in Crested Butte is an awesome experience. From sheer rock faces to mountains of ice, there is a vast array of spots perfect for beginners or climbing experts alike.
Climbing in Crested Butte is challenging, but easily accessible and very rewarding thanks to the awesome views. Taylor and Black Canyons are the most popular spots to climb in the area, with perfect spots for both beginner and intermediate climbers. There are several great routes on Taylor Canyon Road, with its challenging rock faces right off the road, making it great for novice climbers. Taylor Canyon, or Harmels as it is known to the locals, offers awesome intermediate climbing as well with many routes under three pitches, and several with only a single a pitch.
If you prefer to enlist the services of an experienced guide, there are a couple outfitters in the area up to the task. You can choose from a three hour, half day lesson, perfect for beginners or a full day where you can focus on the basics of mountaineering. For more advanced climbers you can simply hire a guide to climb with you and take you to some of the lesser known climbing spots.
Whether you want to learn how to climb or are a veteran looking for some exciting new challenges, Crested Butte is the perfect place to experience rock or ice climbing.
